🧳 The Suitcase Shuffle
When you can’t find your own luggage at the station.
Berenberg has been open for business since 1590, back when Shakespeare was still an unknown. Founded in Hamburg by two Protestant brothers who fled Antwerp rather than convert, it is the second-oldest bank still standing and the oldest run by personally liable partners. In 436 years it has had some 40 of them, a pace that makes Vatican succession look frantic. On Friday, Germany’s financial regulator, BaFin, suspended three in one afternoon.
A partnership bank’s selling point is that the men in charge stake their own money on every decision. Personal liability is meant to breed caution the way a cliff edge concentrates the mind. The regulator did not find caution. It found proprietary trades the bank itself could not, or would not, account for. The 2025 accounts had sat unpublished for months, the bank reportedly at odds with its auditor over what its positions were worth. A 436-year-old house unable to price its own book has a problem no press release outlives.
The suspended trio were no custodians of a sleepy Hanseatic relic. Under Hendrik Riehmer, in charge since 2008, Berenberg spent a decade reinventing itself as an investment bank, hiring hard in London and New York. At its peak it ranked top five for London listings, ahead of JPMorgan and Barclays: a bold bet for a German wealth manager on European IPOs. That market then sank to its weakest since 2009, 70% below its long-run average, stranding an IPO specialist in a world almost without IPOs. Profit fell from €81.6M in 2024 to about €20M last year. Riehmer’s offices were raided in 2019 over an insider-trading suspicion, since dropped, which in Hamburg passes for a character reference.
A warning, a fine, a quiet word with the supervisory board: that is the regulator’s usual register. Suspending a sitting board and installing commissioners is the instrument BaFin keeps for banks that are collapsing, not ones forecasting €40M half-years. The cure looks too large for the disclosed disease. The surgeon is no stranger to the patient: BaFin reached for Hans-Walter Peters, 71, who ran the bank for decades and chaired Germany’s banking lobby until 2021, Riehmer’s longtime partner at the top of the same house. The man brought in to examine the culture is the man who built it, and is, by his own account, delighted to be back. His fellow commissioner, Michael Horf, last cleaned up a fraud-hit Volksbank. Berenberg insists no client lost a cent, probably true. A merchant bank survives 436 years not on its balance sheet but on the belief that its word is collateral. Money is fungible; four centuries of being believed are not. Whatever those trades turn out to be, an institution that outlived empires has just conceded, in the open, that it cannot vouch for itself. No strong half-year buys that back.
