๐ฅถ Still Waiting
The moneyโs chilling. The clubs are too.
A Barclays account in the name of the Football Association Premier League Limited has been frozen since January 2025, and a magistrates’ court in London has just extended the freeze to 15 January 2027, the statutory maximum. The most damaging document was written by the Premier League itself: a defence against money laundering request, the consent filing British law demands before a firm touches suspect money, lodged in December 2024 and worrying that licence fees from Sorare, the SoftBank-backed NFT card game, might be criminal property. Asked in the witness box whether that filing set out the league’s suspicions, its director of legal answered yes. Section 308 of the Proceeds of Crime Act protects a buyer who takes property in good faith, for value and without notice. It does not protect a buyer who suspected. The league had put its suspicion in writing, dated it and posted it to the National Crime Agency.
In October 2021 the Gambling Commission announced it was examining whether Sorare’s game needed an operating licence. The league asked for a legal opinion and received a summary of somebody else’s casuistry: advice commissioned by Sorare, from Sorare’s advisers, carrying an explicit line that no third party should rely on it. The league never commissioned one of its own. Thirteen months later it signed a four-year licence, unveiled in January 2023 at ยฃ120M, with an option to take equity in the company whose legality was the open question. Against that fanfare, ยฃ27.5M actually landed, and ยฃ7.5M has sat unpaid for a year without a writ. The judge noted, drily, that a claimant complaining of 20 months without its money might at least have asked for the rest.
Betting logos vanished from the front of Premier League shirts this season, two decades of Betway and Fun88 ended by a voluntary ban and a reported ยฃ80M hole in sponsorship income. The logos moved a few inches. Stake, which no longer holds a UK licence, now sits on Everton’s sleeve on a multi-year deal, while Britain’s culture ministry consults on whether unlicensed operators should advertise at all. The distance between virtue and vice is four inches of cloth.
British anti-money-laundering machinery processed 866,616 suspicious activity reports last year and denied a record ยฃ382.6M to suspected criminals, resting on firms volunteering their unease. The Premier League volunteered. It ring-fenced the cash before anyone asked, told the agency what worried it, asked permission to pay its 20 clubs, and handed over the evidence that keeps the money frozen. Sorare’s trial is not listed until June 2027, five months after the freeze hits its legal limit. The law will have been applied correctly. The lesson filed away in every compliance department that reads the judgment will be silence.
