๐๏ธ Ring and Blink
Blink once: another $29K just landed somewhere invisible.
The Nasdaq bell rang in June, SpaceX began trading under SPCX, and a single human being became worth a trillion dollars. Forbes says $1.2T, Bloomberg says $1.1T, and the gap between those two estimates is larger than the entire fortune of the richest citizen in most countries on earth. The number is so vast it stops meaning anything, which is precisely why every commentator reaches for the same crutch: the GDP of some mid-sized nation. The comparison is lazy and wrong. A GDP is a flow, the output of a country across 12 months of labour. A fortune is a stock, a thing that sits there. Setting one against the other is like declaring a year’s salary and a bank balance to be the same item.
None of it is real, runs the predictable objection: paper wealth, Tesla shares that cannot be spent, locked up and illiquid. The banks disagreed. In 2022 that same paper served as collateral for the $13B of debt raised to swallow Twitter, a platform since renamed, gutted, and worth a fraction of what was paid. Nobody advances that kind of money against a mood. Illiquid is not imaginary. It means the trillion exists everywhere except in a wallet.
Better yardsticks exist, and they insult the intelligence rather less than any set of national accounts. A trillion dollars buys every flat, every garret, every Haussmannian floor in Paris, the entire residential stock valued near โฌ700B, with change to spare for a second city somewhere. It is roughly 4 LVMHs, the largest listed company on the continent, purchased outright and kept in a drawer. Divided evenly, it is about $140 pressed into the hand of every living person on the planet. Counted in local heroes, it is some 70 Xavier Niels, the telecoms billionaire who once accepted a fistfight in a Lidl car park and actually turned up. The fortune swelled by around $29K every second of 2026, more than most workers earn in a year, banked in the time it takes to clear the throat.
The arithmetic is a parlour game, and parlour games are a method of not looking at the thing directly. The disquieting part is not that one man outweighs a continent’s worth of handbags and champagne. It is that the figure has climbed past the point where any mind can hold it, and a sum nobody can picture is a sum nobody can govern. Wealth that cannot be imagined cannot be taxed, regulated, or argued with on level terms. A trillion dollars buys almost anything on the list. The one purchase it has made quietly, on credit, in everyone’s name, is the collapse of the public’s ability to understand what it is looking at.
