๐ฆ Parrot In A Robe
Some judgments now come with feathers.
Seven seasons after the Premier League introduced video assistant referees, the touchlines have never been louder. Every weekend produces a fresh referendum on what counts as a "clear and obvious error", with broadcasters dissecting armpit-width offsides like Talmudic scholars and managers shouting into microphones once reserved for the linesman. The technology was sold as the end of argument. It now bankrolls a small industry of pundits paid to argue about it.
The same fantasy underwrites the enthusiasm for large language models. A machine ingests most of the written internet, computes a weighted average, and the output is treated as oracular because no human hand is visibly attached to it. French regional newsrooms have solemnly asked ChatGPT whether the pastry is a pain au chocolat or a chocolatine, a question France has fought over for decades, as though a model trained partly on Reddit outranked the baker downstairs. Put the same political question to Grok, Claude and ChatGPT and the answers diverge by lab. When OpenAI signed its Pentagon contract in February, Claude reached No. 1 on the US App Store within days, for reasons that had nothing to do with token windows.
A year ago Albania appointed Diella, an avatar in traditional Zadrimรซ costume running on OpenAI models, as Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, with a remit to make public tenders "100 percent free of corruption". Three months later, prosecutors placed the two directors of AKSHI, the agency that built her, under house arrest over rigged procurement. The file describes kickbacks in wine boxes, the abduction of a rival contractor who had appealed a dozen of the agency's tenders, and more than โฌ40M in seized assets. Her own development was not among the tainted contracts. The avatar was clean. The people holding the pen were not. Wimbledon had supplied the miniature two months earlier: the first tournament played without line judges ended with the All England Club apologising for three calls missed on Centre Court after an operator switched the tracking off.
A trial is a story before it is a calculation: a victim, an accused, and a context two reasonable judges will read differently, which is not a defect of the system but the system itself. The same goes for a goal, a borderline ace, a diagnosis at three in the morning when the nurse has to choose. Handing the call to a machine does not remove the judgment, it moves it upstream to whoever assembled the training data and decided what counted as a right answer. Albania's prime minister concedes that officials will still sign off on whatever Diella recommends. That is the trick. The algorithm collects the credit, the official keeps the pen, and the result belongs to nobody. Neutrality sold as a feature works as an alibi.
