๐ Coin Drop in the Desert
Guess where your heating bill just went.
Europe is long fossil fuels to the tune of roughly โฌ400B a year, a position it keeps adding to with the serene confidence of a man averaging down on a stock he has stopped reading about. The long-term case for the trade gave out a while ago, somewhere between the climate science and the actuaries who quietly started repricing the risk. That portion of the bill does not arrive on a quarterly schedule, which is precisely why it gets ignored. The shorter-term case is harder to file away, because the market has now returned the verdict twice, in writing, with a date stamp.
The first margin call landed in 2022, when Russian gas detonated and dragged euro area inflation to 10.6% that October, an event economists out of polite vocabulary christened ยซย fossilflation.ย ยป The second arrived at the pump, oil spiking on cue every time a conflict drifted near a shipping lane. A desk told twice might think about closing the position. This one changed counterparty. Russian gas gave way to American LNG and Gulf crude, just as imported, just as priced by people who answer to other electorates. Hungary and Slovakia still pull Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. Imported fossil fuels covered 58% of the bloc’s energy in 2023, the same share as before the lesson. Diversification, the continent calls it.
The performance of incomprehension is the genuinely European part. The ECB can name the mechanism in plain terms, repeated commodity shocks imported from unstable regions break the assumptions under which monetary policy is supposed to work, and it spent the better part of three years running controlled burns on the economy to prove it. The continent filed the whole episode under bad weather. Spain, which had the poor taste to act, closed part of its position and watched wholesale power prices in early 2024 run roughly 40% below where they would have landed had it left generation frozen at 2019 levels. It was treated as an eccentric rather than a control group.
A trade that is wrong on the long horizon and has been margin-called twice on the short one is not a position. It is a confession, delayed. None of this makes the exit cheap: โฌ660B a year is the stated need, and the European Investment Bank has put up roughly โฌ25B, which is either a rounding error or a remarkably honest statement of intent. But the alternative is the one already running, the same emergency interventions every time a tanker changes course, paid in installments, smeared across heating bills and public finances that never quite recover before the next call comes in.
