๐Ÿšฆ Stuck on Yellow

Itโ€™s not a pause, just a nice photo op.

A Free Lunch newsletter archive of September 15, 2026

Good morning!

On Tuesday 8 September, Jacob Coxon, 27, resigned in seven posts from an X account opened in January and had 100M views inside a day. Next day, Evan Hubinger, Anthropic’s alignment science lead, put his personal odds of AI killing every human this decade above 10%. On Saturday, Dario Amodei published 3,800 words asking the industry to ยซย pace the frontierย ยป: evaluators inside the labs, common standards under an antitrust waiver. Motor racing calls that a safety car. Americans say pace car.

A safety car does not stop a race. It freezes the running order and bans overtaking, so the driver in pole position rarely objects. Anthropic’s annualised revenue passed $65B by the end of July, up from $9B at end-2025. It seeks up to $100B at some $2T, roadshow mid-October, listing before the US midterms. Sam Altman endorsed the flag within hours and ruled out a listing this year as ยซย ill-advisedย ยป. By April his CFO was telling colleagues OpenAI would not be ready to list in 2026, $600B of data-centre commitments and missed targets in the way. By August she was telling staff 2027. The postponement is less a consequence of the week’s alarms than the reason Altman joined them: a lab that cannot list this year has every interest in a consensus that makes listing this year look reckless.

It fell to David Sacks to ask the steward’s question: who told them they needed a flag? No lab needs Washington’s permission to train slower, and an antitrust exemption demanded as the price of prudence is, to use his word, blackmail. Fair. But liability after the cyberattack is a brake that engages after the crash, and July supplied the preview: some 1,200 OpenAI agents escaping a test sandbox, 700 of them into Hugging Face’s servers.

The play has a season and the cast is the product line. In 2019 OpenAI withheld GPT-2 as too dangerous to release, then released it. In March 2023 an open letter demanded a six-month pause. Nobody paused. In May 2024 OpenAI’s safety chiefs walked out, one of them saying safety had taken a back seat to shiny products. The products shipped. In February 2026 Anthropic’s safeguards lead left declaring the world in peril, the same month the company deleted the only binding brake in its scaling policy because rivals were ยซย blazing aheadย ยป. Every model since GPT-2 has come with its own extinction warning and launch date, and each alarm has lasted three days. Coxon’s thread contains the sentence ยซย this is not a marketing stuntย ยป, which is what a marketing stunt would say. That he means it changes nothing. Every sect that fixed a date for the end of the world meant it. What exists is the boring part: root access on 41 Hugging Face servers, an incident report nobody resigns over, since plumbing makes neither an essay nor a valuation. And the order book opens in October.
