๐ง Teaspoon Twist
Fighting a bonfire with a juice box and a prayer.
The American Treasury’s answer to the highest long-bond yields since 2007 is to buy back at least $4B of its own paper per operation from September, against a gross federal debt that crossed $40T in mid-August. Thirty-year yields obligingly fell 10 basis points on the news, then climbed back through their starting level by Thursday lunchtime, which is the bond market’s way of returning a gift unopened. Operation Twist, performed with a teaspoon. By the afternoon Scott Bessent, America’s finance minister, was on the White House driveway insisting the ceiling was really a floor and that yields do not reflect fundamentals. Anyone reduced to telling the market which of its own thoughts are legitimate has lost the argument already.
Five American companies and their chip supplier placed $225B of bonds in the first half alone, up 974% on the year before, with $400B in view by December. Hyperscaler capital spending is tracking toward $770B for 2026. Alphabet pulled $84.75B out of the equity market in June, which is what a company with a licence to print money does when the debt window gets crowded, and Amazon’s last $25B issue came 2.5x covered against 3.2x in March. Those are the fundamentals. The largest borrower in history now queues behind a firm that sells advertisements next to holiday photographs, and the queue shows no deference to sovereignty. It runs through Paris, Berlin and Tokyo too, with French 30-year debt at post-2008 highs, bunds back at 2011 levels and Japanese 10-year paper at a 30-year peak.
Calling the whole thing a bubble has become the cheapest opinion in finance, available at any conference for the price of a lanyard. Substations, turbines and switchyards are objects. The GPUs inside run down on a three-year clock, but the power contracts underneath will be worth something whether or not a chatbot ever turns a profit. Against that sits the other great borrowing programme of the age: net interest reached $963B in 10 months, 15% of everything Washington spends, building nothing whatsoever, while the Pentagon heads for $1.5T by 2027. Meta at least leaves buildings behind. Kevin Warsh, confirmed as Fed chair in May by 54 votes to 45, speaks at Jackson Hole on 28 August, three of his regional presidents having dissented in July in favour of higher rates while the president telephones for two points off.
The 30-year fixed mortgage sits at 6.67%. The median age of a first-time buyer in America has reached 40, an all-time high, against 33 five years ago. Of 46M renting households, some 6M can afford a median-priced home on first-time terms. Ohio will get its 10 gigawatts, its transformers and its construction payroll. The people living beside it will be renting at 40, for reasons nobody in Washington is willing to say out loud.
