🍔 The Headset Knows

If you frown, the AI tattles.

A Free Lunch newsletter archive of 10 August 2026

Good morning!

Somewhere in a Burger King, an employee in a paper hat is being graded on warmth by an AI chatbot called Patty. She lives in the headset, listens to every "would you like fries with that," and quietly reports back on whether it was delivered with sufficient cheer. The fast-food worker is now performing emotional labour for two audiences: the customer, and a piece of software named after a burger patty. Burger King insists no individual worker is scored, a reassurance that has never once preceded anything other than a scoring system.

Patty has colleagues. The global market for "emotion AI", software that purports to read feelings off faces, voices, and Slack messages, is projected to hit $9B by 2030. MetLife runs call-centre voices through pitch-and-tone analysis. HireVue, which supplies job-screening tech to Ikea and Regeneron, drew a discrimination complaint last year over an uncaptioned promotion interview with a deaf Intuit employee, whose automated feedback then advised her to "practice active listening." An Ohio firm called Aware scans Slack and Teams messages for sentiment on behalf of Walmart, Starbucks and Delta. A Finnish firm called Framery has trialled office phone booths with biosensors measuring heart rate, breathing, and "nervousness," presumably so management knows when an employee has just received bad news from their oncologist.

The technology is, of course, garbage. The whole field rests on Paul Ekman's 1970s theory of six universal emotions, a framework so contested that the neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett has spent a decade in print explaining that people scowl when angry about 25% of the time, and scowl when they are not. Lauren Rhue fed photos of NBA players into two commercial emotion readers in 2018 and found Black athletes coded angrier than white teammates, sometimes while smiling. None of which matters commercially. UnitedHealth Group let keyboard inactivity cut the pay and bonuses of therapists who were, in fact, in session with patients, and kept the metric. The product is plausible deniability, produced when HR signs the dismissal letter.

That a company is entitled to know whether its staff are working is a defensible position. That same company deciding which microexpressions a parent may wear after a difficult school run, which tones a nurse may use with a dying patient, which 25% of scowls count as insubordination, has settled a different question: which kinds of people are still permitted to hold a job. The EU's AI Act has banned the practice in workplaces since 2025, with carve-outs for medical and safety uses. MorphCast, an early Italian entrant, had incorporated in Delaware the year before and now sells from there. Everywhere else, the experiment continues. Patty is listening, and she would prefer a smile.
