Lundi, OpenAI a annoncé qu'un modèle avait résolu plus de 100 problèmes de maths. Sans publier ni la liste ni les démonstrations. Le même modèle avait déjà résolu, 2 semaines plus tôt, le problème de Navier-Stokes. Ce défi du millénaire, doté de 1M$ par l'institut Clay, était posé là depuis 1934. Il lui a fallu 88 heures et 10K agents. Et pouf. Les mathématiciens trouvent que ça va un peu trop vite, alors OpenAI a nommé un aréopage de 9 d'entre eux chargés de dire comment gérer l'histoire. Ils peuvent parler, écrire, démissionner. Mais ils n'ont aucun contrôle sur ce que fait OpenAI.
Dix jours plus tôt, 25 titulaires de la breloque Fields, la Légion d'honneur des matheux, avaient signé une pétition. Les grands problèmes, ouvrez les guillemets, ne sont pas des trophées mais des phares : la route qu'ils éclairent compte plus que la solution. C'est beau comme du Yann Moix. Sauf que Terence Tao, signataire et le cerveau le plus rapide de la planète encore équipé de poumons, parle de mine à ciel ouvert. Un problème résolu ne repousse pas, et les petits, ceux sur lesquels un doctorant apprend le métier, partent avec les gros. Haussement d'épaules numérique : des mandarins qui défendent leur rente. Que des médaillés défendent leur métier, c'est humain, mais l'objection rate l'essentiel. La preuve de Navier-Stokes fait 166 pages, vérifiées par un logiciel, Lean, qui contrôle que chaque ligne découle de la précédente. Le logiciel dit que la preuve est juste. Il ne dit pas qu'un être humain sait pourquoi elle est juste. Des comptes certifiés par le commissaire et des comptes qu'il comprend, tout lecteur de bilans connaît la différence.
Comprendre, ça sert à réutiliser. En 1940, Hardy, mathématicien de Cambridge, se félicitait, so british, que la théorie des nombres n'ait aucune utilité pratique. 80 ans plus tard, chaque paiement par carte est protégé par un code bâti sur les nombres premiers, parce qu'entre-temps des gens avaient compris cette théorie assez bien pour en faire une serrure. Et pour apprendre à comprendre, un doctorant a besoin d'un petit problème que personne n'a encore résolu. Si la machine les a tous liquidés, il n'a plus rien à se mettre sous la dent. Trois ans dans un bureau sans fenêtre pour un salaire de caissier : c'est le poste que l'IA supprime partout ailleurs, l'analyste junior, le stagiaire en cabinet. Sauf qu'ici la machine ne prend pas la place du doctorant. Elle crame le champ dans lequel il pousse.
Cent résultats annoncés, aucun publié, un comité pour meubler l'attente : quiconque sait que Station F n'est pas une radio reconnaîtra la chorégraphie. Au prochain tour de table, ces 100 théorèmes vaudront bien plus que le 1M$ de Clay, et aucun investisseur ne demandera si quelqu'un les a compris. Reste la proposition de Tao : sanctuariser quelques problèmes comme des parcs nationaux. Il ne lui manque que les gardes forestiers, les tables de pique-nique et le panneau à l'entrée : prière de ne pas nourrir les agents.
