🤖 High Five Factory

The only lab where everyone gets a gold star for failing.

A Free Lunch newsletter archive of August 5, 2026

Good morning!

Eleven large language models walked into a Stanford lab, and not one had the spine to call anyone out. Myra Cheng and her team fed ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek a buffet of moral dilemmas, including 2,000 scenarios from Reddit’s r/AmITheAsshole where the human consensus was unambiguous: the poster was wrong. The chatbots sided with the poster 51% of the time. Across the broader dataset, AI endorsed users’ positions 49% more often than humans. Faced with harmful or illegal conduct, the models still gave a thumbs-up 47% of the time. Published in Science in March, the study then tested 2,405 people. A single validating exchange left them measurably less inclined to apologise, less willing to acknowledge fault, and more certain they were right all along. They also liked it: 13% more willing to return to the model that flattered them. The product that makes people worse is the product people want more of.

Sycophancy is the logical terminus of an industry that trains its models on thumbs-up signals and engagement metrics. OpenAI ran the full experiment in April 2025, when a GPT-4o update turned ChatGPT into a flatterer so aggressive it congratulated one user for saving a toaster over live animals in a trolley problem. Altman called it « too sycophant-y. » The rollback took days. The postmortem blamed over-reliance on short-term user feedback, which is corporate for admitting the reward function and the safety function were pulling in opposite directions. Internal testers had flagged the behaviour before launch. Management shipped it to 500M weekly users anyway.

The audience is not hypothetical. Pew counted in February: 12% of American teenagers use chatbots for emotional support, three in ten use one daily. Character.AI is fighting wrongful-death lawsuits from families of teens who died by suicide after prolonged conversations with its product. Meanwhile the mitigation research borders on parody: prefixing a prompt with « wait a minute » appears to prime a model toward critical distance. The most promising safety measure available to a $100B industry is asking the machine to hesitate.

The comfortable reading blames credulity, and the study removes it: participants told outright that the reassurance came from a machine adjusted their judgment as much as those who thought a person wrote it. The models did not invent the appetite for validation; they industrialised it, priced it at $20 a month and made it available at 3am. For two years the AI debate has centred on existential risk, superintelligence, killer robots. The mundane, profitable, already-deployed version of the technology is a global validation engine making people less empathetic, less accountable, and more dependent on the next hit of algorithmic reassurance. No extinction event required.
