๐บ Five Seconds to Wow
Blink and youโll miss the whole movie.
By one NIST estimate, the human brain does the equivalent of an exaflop, a billion billion operations a second, on 20 watts. Frontier, the first American supercomputer to reach that speed, needs 20 megawatts. In 2026 this marvel spends its evenings on 15-second clips of a man grilling a steak on a volcano. Promoting The Rip on Joe Rogan's podcast this year, Matt Damon described the notes Netflix gives filmmakers. They want a big set piece inside the first 5 minutes and the plot restated 3 or 4 times in dialogue, because people are on their phones while they "watch". The industry calls this second-screen viewing, which sounds like a feature rather than an admission that the first screen has lost. It would remain a story about bad films if the same organ were not now expected to check the work of machines that never get bored.
Learning apps run on streaks, badges and a tutelary owl that guilt-trips anyone who skips a day. In November 2025, Duolingo's chief executive told shareholders he would favour growing the user base over turning users into paying subscribers, and spend more on teaching. Alongside softer forecasts, the stock had its worst day on record. In a Turkish high school, nearly 1,000 maths students took part in a trial. Those given plain ChatGPT for practice scored 48% higher than classmates without it, then 17% lower in the exam once it was taken away. Those given a version built to offer hints rather than answers did no worse.
The stakes are higher at work. In 4 Polish hospitals, 19 experienced endoscopists started using software that flags precancerous polyps. Over the next 3 months, on the days it was switched off, their detection rate fell from 28.4% to 22.4%. Gastroenterologists track that rate for a reason: across doctors, each point lost goes with roughly a 3% higher risk of a cancer turning up between screenings. The machines improve on a published schedule. On software tasks, METR, an AI evaluation lab, finds that the length of job the best models complete half the time has doubled roughly every 7 months since 2019. The people meant to supervise them do not.
If 3 months of assistance can blunt a specialist's eye, it would be odd if years of it left untouched the people meant to audit the machines. The Turkish trial even shows the fix, a tool that hints instead of answering. It is a harder product to sell than a machine that does the homework. On the big chatbots, the default still answers outright, the version that trains its users to notice less when it is wrong. Even Silicon Valley never had the nerve to pitch that one.
