🎯 Bullseye for Nobody

If you write too well, you flunk the robot’s test.

A Free Lunch newsletter archive of 14 August 2026

Good morning!

The first chapter of L'Œuvre, Zola's 1886 novel about a painter who cannot finish anything, dropped into one of those free detectors boasting 29,000 professional users, comes back with a verdict drawn in a red donut: 5% human. Probably generated by artificial intelligence, ChatGPT for instance, and no room for doubt about it, says the interface with the calm of a coroner. Zola died in 1902 of a blocked chimney, which narrows the list of plausible collaborators.

Nothing malfunctioned. The machine learned French by swallowing the nineteenth century whole, Zola very much included, and now finds his cadences suspiciously familiar. These tools measure perplexity: how predictable each word is given the last few. Prose taught, imitated and drilled into French schoolchildren for 140 years scores appallingly well on predictability, because the language model and the school syllabus were assigned the same reading list. The algorithm never claimed Zola used a chatbot. It answered a narrower question: if a stranger handed over this paragraph claiming to have written it, how suspicious should the recipient be. Very. Nobody produces that sentence in 2026 without either 30 years of practice or 11 seconds of prompting. The verdict is sound. Its readers are the problem.

Set loose on 91 human-written TOEFL essays by non-native speakers, 7 detectors flagged 61% as machine output, and 89 of the 91 were caught by at least one. OpenAI, which built the thing everyone is hunting, withdrew its own classifier in July 2023 after conceding it identified 26% of AI text and defamed 9% of the human variety. Vanderbilt University switched off Turnitin's detector after running the vendor's sub-1% error rate against its 75,000 papers a year: 750 students accused of writing either badly enough to look average or well enough to look synthetic. The sector is worth $1.79B and projects $6.96B by 2032, handsome money for a coin toss with a subscription model. Downstream, 43 "humanizer" services collected 33.9M visits in one month, teenagers paying to degrade their own sentences until a server relaxes.

A percentage inside a coloured ring, a progress bar labelled with a word most users could not define, and an entire profession stops asking what is being counted. Statistical likelihood has been promoted to intent, and probability now arrives dressed as proof. Faculties that would not convict a student on one witness will do it on one donut. A generation is learning that the safest prose is the clumsy kind, that surviving assessment means writing worse on purpose. Zola scored 5%. In a French classroom this term that figure opens a disciplinary file rather than a place in the canon. He would have made something magnificent of the scene, and not one person would have believed it was his.
