Hollywood spent the autumn of 2025 in an extended demonstration of how studio boycotts work both ways. In September, more than 4,000 film professionals signed the Film Workers for Palestine pledge refusing to collaborate with Israeli state-funded film institutions. The signatories included Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton and Javier Bardem, who turned up to the Emmys wearing a keffiyeh. Paramount, freshly acquired by David Ellison, the son of Oracle billionaire and prominent Israel donor Larry Ellison, became the first major studio to publicly denounce the pledge. By November, Variety was reporting that Paramount maintained an informal list of talent it would no longer hire, on grounds the signatories happened to share.
The pattern is older than the cause. In 2021, Disney fired Gina Carano from The Mandalorian over Instagram posts the studio found politically intolerable, and the same press now solemn about Hollywood blacklists treated it as routine HR hygiene. Carano sued, settled in August 2025 with Elon Musk underwriting the lawsuit, and fought Ronda Rousey on Netflix this month for her trouble. The principle that studios may freely choose their collaborators on political grounds turns out to enjoy variable support depending on whose collaborators are being chosen.
Cannes provided the European edition this weekend. Some 600 French film professionals, including Juliette Binoche, signed a petition denouncing Vincent Bollorรฉ, the Catholic traditionalist billionaire whose grip on Canal+ extends from television talk shows to the country’s largest pre-purchaser of cinema, with an obligatory โฌ160M earmarked for French film in 2026 alone. Maxime Saada, Canal+’s chief executive, replied at the traditional producers’ brunch on the Croisette that he would prefer not to keep funding people who consider his shareholder a ยซย crypto-fascist.ย ยป Cue indignation. Cue press releases. Cue solemn declarations that the threat confirms Canal+’s lack of independence, which is a creative use of the word given that the complaint is about a company exercising it.
Among the signatories sits Jean-Pascal Zadi, whose 2020 comedy Tout simplement noir received roughly โฌ1.3M from Canal+ and its subsidiaries, and who hosted his own Canal+ sketch series two years later. None of this disqualifies anyone’s right to sign anything. It does, however, raise the question of what petitioners imagine they are denouncing when they denounce the institution writing their cheques. Cannes has always been a festival of dissonance: champagne for the proletariat, red carpet for the rebellion. This year it has merely been louder about it.
